Warm and cool colours can manipulate the way a room is perceived visually and emotionally. For example, you can paint a large room with warm colour. Since warm colour appears to advance, walls swathed in sunny hues will seem closer together and make the room feels more intimate. On the other hand, cool colour appears to recede and can be used for smaller and tight spaces.
Also, using contrast between colour have the same impact of using dark colour, by reducing a perceived space. Monochromatic colour will tend to enlarge space while neutral colour of the same value makes the walls retreat and make a space flow from room to room.
Bare in mind also that light has a role to play when changing the quality of the colour. Make sure you consider the fact that the quality of light changes throughout the course of the day.
