Long ago, rugs and carpets were woven. In the beginning of the twentieth century, tufted rugs were pioneered in Dalton, Georgia. Hence, tufted carpets are much cost efficient than woven carpet although the latter is more durable and beautiful.
Woven carpets are made from various methods of weaving processes, each with their own unique character. The method of weaving carpet is such that the strong vertical yarns are interwoven with the weaker horizontal yarns.
On the other hand, tufted carpet is constructed by inserting the yarn through a mesh backing and is held in place by adhesive. Once, this is completed, a second backing mesh is adhered to the first layer for stability.
