Fluorescent light is invented in 1938. It produces light by a combination of glowing gas and fluorescent phosphors. A sealed tubular bulb is filled with mercury vapour and coated with phosphors on the interior.
The gas produces ultraviolet radiation when electricity is passed through it. This in turn acts on the phosphors to emit light.
Fluorescent light uses far less electricity than incandescent light and last as much as twenty times longer. It also produce an even diffuse lighting. Hence, fluorescent light is used in commercial interiors or kitchens and undercabinet fixtures at homes.
The major drawback of using fluorescent light is that it produces a skewed colour which is cold and bluish white. Also, the fluorescent light tends to fade with age.
