Designing with day lighting

The sun is a constant source of light. It does not change its quantity and intensity. But the earth in which we are living in changes every now and then! Hence, our perception of sunlight does vary with our location, time and changes in the atmosphere.

How does the orientation of our houses determine nature lighting design?

A northern exposure provides clear, consistent light source from a reflective sky. On the other hand, eastern exposures have a balanced, brighter morning sunlight. The major problem with eastern sunlight is glare. Western sunlight is warm and hot. It tends to be hazy from impurities in the hot afternoon air. Southern light source is the best source of daylighting. It admit warm sunlight for the longest period of each day, all year long.

Sunlight entering our interiors is never constant. It varies in intensity, colour tones and direction over the course of a day. Hence, when designing your interior , remember that sunlight is the only element of your design scheme that is constantly changing! It affects the mood of the interior environment!

Natural light entering a room interacts with other design elements, changing the appearance of the elements that it comes into contact with. When using a curtain, remember that natural light can diffuse through the curtains and change its look. Likewise, shadow are casted by shutters when daylight shines on it.

Hence, when designing your interior space, take advantage of the daylight. Choose surfaces in your design elements that bring out the best quality of daylighting.
