Floor lacquers usually consist of two componenets- the bulk of the product, often sold in 5 litres containers and a special hardener or crosslinker that must be mixed with the lacquer before use. It is essential that you follow the manufacturer’ s instructions because once you mix them, it must be used within a limited time. Also do bare in mind that you need to determine how much lacquer you need before mixing them.
So how do we go about mixing the lacquer? First, shake the main component thorougly in its container and, working to the nearest litre, pour just the right amount needed to complete the job into the container. Add an appropriate amount of hardener and stir with a small brush. Allow the mixture to settle for 5 mins before using it.
How do you apply the lacquer then?
The lacquer can be brushed on in the same way as varnish except that it should be laid on as thickly as possible. It would be good to use a special lambswood mop, although a roller fitted with an extension handle can perform better when there is a large area to be applied.
If there are gaps in the floorboards, load the roller from a tray to prevent losing too much lacquer through the gaps. Depending on conditions, floor lacquer can be recoated after 1-2 hours. Normally, for domestic purposes, 3 coats should be enough.
