If you wish to display drawings or photographs, make sure that the frame is large enough to accomodate a mat. For an up to date look, make sure that the mat is at least 6 inches larger than the photograph or illustration. This can be an effective way to draw attention to a small piece of art.
So, rather than choosing a mat colour from the surrounding room, choose instead to pull it out of the work of art. Hence, the mat will always work with the piece no matter where it hangs.
