Wax is useful to give protection and sheen to many film finishes, especially glossy ones. A good furniture waz is a paste wax containing at least some percentage of carnauba wax. Wax finish is easy to apply, wipe on finish but it is usually not suitable by itself because it offers so little protection for the wood. Wax is normally used only as a top coating for other finishes such as shellac.
Hence, it is always good to replace wax every year by washing the surface with mineral spirits using nylon abrasive pad and then reapplying the wax.
