All of us can develop an eye for good colour combinations and become aware of how colours and patterns work together. In order to improve your own colour tase and judgement, you need to observe the colour combinations in everyday life. Take note of your surroundings wherever you are and study window displays, postels and magazines. Do keep a note book and record what you like or do not like and soon you will discover that colour combination is not that difficult.
How do we use colour in our design then? For example, to emphasize spaciousness, adopt light colour tones like white or pale pastels. To suggest cosiness and intimacy, use plenty of deeper tones and bold colours such as red. Also, colourful patterns and texture can help to reinforce the idea of intimacy.
Using alot of bright colours will help to enliven a dull, predominantly shady room, while subtle colours and darker tones will tone down a sunny room.
The use of colour is an art that decorators must know. Like music, colour varies enormously in the mood and atmosphere it creates. So do allow your own style to develop as you improve in your decorating skills.
